La Ierusalim, pe muntele Herzl, s-a ținut ceremonia de aprindere a torțelor care a deschis sărbătorirea celor 78 de ani de la declararea independenței Israelului. Anul acesta deviza a fost „Energia reînnoirii”. Seara a fost condusă de cântărețul Rotem Cohen și actrița Mali Levi.
Totul s-a petrecut pe fondul unei păci foarte șubrede cu Iranul și Hezbollah. Până în ultimul moment nu s-a știut dacă vor începe rachetele sau dacă evenimentul va fi difuzat din înregistrare. Armata a pregătit o variantă de rezervă din timp, iar parada aviatică a fost anulată și anul acesta, la fel ca anul trecut.

Torțe au aprins fostul ministru al apărării Moshe Ya'alon, activistă pentru eliberarea ostaticilor Ifat Calderon, deputatul Gilad Kariv și fondatorii mișcării „Frați de arme”.
Documente la care a avut acces Anima News arată că serviciile de securitate au recomandat închiderea spațiului aerian deasupra Ierusalimului pe durata festivităților, după ce au fost interceptate semnale de amenințare din direcția Siriei.
